Depression

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Everyone experiences mood swings – frustrations, grief from loss of someone close to you, loss of job and transitory blues. When depression interferes with your ability in doing ordinary activities and enjoying pleasurable moments, you need help.

It is an illness. Researchers have shown that it is a result from biochemical imbalances in the brain.

Causes of Depression

Biological
People suffering from depression have imbalances of neurotransmitters, natural substances that allow brain cells to communicate with each other. The neurotransmitters are serotonin and norepinephrine. A deficiency in serotonin can cause sleep problems, irritability, and anxiety. Likewise, a decreased amount in norepinephrine, which regulates alertness and arousal, can contribute to fatigue and depressed mood of the illness.

Genetic
Genetic factors play a role in some depression.

Environmental
Environmental situations, such as stress or break up of important attachments, can precipitate depression, especially for vulnerable persons.

Symptoms of Depression

  • Persistent, sad, anxious or empty mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt,
  • Worthlessness or helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities
  • Decreased energy,
  • A feeling of fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Treatment

The three most commonly indicated treatments for depression are psychotherapy, medication and electroconvulsive therapy.

The most important thing one can do to help a person with depression, is to help him or her get an appropriate diagnosis and treatment for depression. This involves encouraging the person to stay with the treatment until the symptoms starts to alleviate or to find another alternative treatment if there is no improvements.

Another way to help is to give emotional support. This could involve understanding, patience, affection and encouragement.

Packing Made Easy

October 30th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Ever been getting ready for a trip and find yourself spending too much time simply deciding what to bring, how to keep it wrinkle free and other luggage problems? Well, over packing tops the list of most commonly made travel mistakes. Here are a few quick tips to remember the next time you travel:

1. Determine what to pack

*Make a list of only important things that would fit your travel conditions

* Think “I can’t survive without this” not “I might need this”

* Carry only appropriate things for your destination

2. Choose what to pack it in

*Consider quality, transportability and airline carryon limits

* Forget ‘how it looks’ or it’s design - focus on shape, balance, capacity and arrangement of compartments.

3. Think how to pack it

*Organize the space in your bag in a way that items are easily accessible once you get to your destination.

*Avoid wrinkles by rolling clothing up carefully and placing in a plastic bag

*If carrying breakables during travel, surround them with soft items

Follow these simple tips and when you reach your destination-let’s say Spain- you’ll be unpacking your luggage in one of the Ibiza hotels, smiling - satisfied at your ‘work of art’.

Plan To Travel

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

To travel to distant places like Baguio, Davao, Metro Manila, Palawan, Surigao and other tourist destination needs a lot of planning and money. These are dreams that we can achieve if we put our mind into it. First of all, I haven’t been to one of these places besides Davao and that was the time when my previous company did a wedding engagement. To travel by van was the choice our manager made as it saved us money and time.

Now being an adult, I already have a stable job with good pay. I can already make plans to travel to any tourist destination in Mindanao. I’m thinking of going to Surigao City, where the big waves are or maybe go back to Davao City with my wife. Still I need her YES on this one though or I might get the big smack down.

Still, as I said earlier, to travel to different places needs money and time. My wife and I will schedule that one in a couple of months – for our honeymoon maybe.

Depression in Pregnancy

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

The famous Blue Lagoon goddess, Brooke Shields, almost had it all – a handsome, loving husband, a beautiful baby girl, a flourishing theater career, and a drop dead gorgeous body (as if it never went through the experiences of pregnancy and childbirth) - but she almost took her own life.

She was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression and went through medical and psychological treatment.

A dose of depression every now and then is essential for health promotion both mentally and psychologically. A milder case can be self treated through exercise, meditation or yoga and other health and fitness activities. The severe cases need specialized treatment of medical practitioners.

Pregnant women are more prone to depression. And it can occur during the course of the pregnancy and/or after the birth of the child. According to researchers the rapid hormonal changes occurring within a woman’s body during pregnancy and after childbirth may have caused the depression.

Some races have more health-promoting powers than others. Meaning they are more bale to cope and self-treat depression. But pregnant women of whatever race needs all the support she can get from husbands or partners, families, and friends because bearing a child and giving birth to it are quite overwhelming experiences.

The Art of Reiki

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Reiki is a type spiritual healing developed by Mikao Usui. After fasting and meditating for several weeks on Mount Kurama, Mikao Usui claimed to have gained the ability to heal without energy depletion. Part of the practice, tenohira or palm healing, is used as a form of complementary alternative medicine.

Reiki teachings claim that there is an inexhaustible, universal “life force” or a spiritual energy, which can be used to stimulate healing. This energy will flow through the practitioner’s hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a recipient, who can be clothed. Believers say that the energy is “intelligent”, making the need for expert diagnosis unnecessary.

Concerns about the safety in Reiki are similar to those of other alternative health medicines. Fears from doctors of medicines include patients’ siding with unproven alternative medicines over clinically proven treatments. Some Reiki practitioners encourage their clients to consult a medical doctor for serious conditions, since Reiki complements conventional medicine. Clinical trials have not shown any significant adverse effects from the use of Reiki.

Picking The Right MP3 Player

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

If you are a music lover, for sure you would like to own an MP3 player that really suits your needs, whether it’s brand new or otherwise. Your needs may vary: an mp3 player that holds lots of songs; on that has an FM tuner; or even an mp3 player that is easy to sync with?

Choosing the best mp3 player depends on your specifications. What features do you want? Do you plan to use the MP3 player to work out or jog? If so, you probably want to look at a FLASH memory player (right now, anything less than 20GB in storage size is pretty much a flash memory player). These are less fragile, and have fewer moving parts. Ipod Nano & Creative Zen V or V plus, or the Sandisk e200 series are some examples from this category.

Do you want an FM radio? If so, then know that the iPod doesn’t have that feature unless you buy another $50 add on. Most other players do have an FM tuner. Do you have more than 10GB worth of music? Then you want a HARD DRIVE based player, instead of a flash based player… the full sized iPods, the creative Zen Vision M, the Toshiba Gigabeat, etc.

Do you have a lot of music in WMA format? Do you plan to use subscription services like yahoo! music, or rhapsody, or Napster to go? If so, iPod is out. You need to look at other players that support that technology.

If you want to accessorize, then the iPod is the choice for you. Hundreds of cases, speakers, add-ons, etc. more than any other brand of player. If you watch video on your mp3 player, you can pick from the newest iPods, the Zen vision M, the newest gigabeat, etc. Each different player supports different file types. Most will require you to convert the files. If you don’t care about video, you can probably find an older or used player to satisfy you.

Not only for your personal needs but that kind of best buy gadget can be a unique gift idea for someone special. No need to treat her or him out on a travel trips but this thing alone would surely make her or him feel special.

So Sushi!

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Panda Sushi Food ArtThe famous sushi we often order in food shops is of Japanese origin. Sushi, “vinegared rice” or literally meaning “it’s sour”, originated as a way of preserving tuna – a type of fish. The fish is salted and allowed to set in vinegar rice. Thus, with the marriage of vinegar rice and other ingredients, the name sushi was derived.

A Japanese cooking recipe would tell you that there are various types of sushi. The combinations of sushi and other ingredients the way you see them in cooking recipes and the way they are served determine the types of sushi. You should not think that sushi is the raw fish. In fact, the raw fish is referred to as sashimi. Sushi is often topped with raw fish, meat or vegetables that happen to be what sticks on people’s minds.

These are the types of sushi according to a cooking recipe book I found:

Sushi Food ArtNigiri Sushi – a hand shaped sushi laid with toppings such as varieties of seafood or fish.

Oshi Sushi – pressed sushi, vinegar rice is packed into a mold and enclosed with marinated fish.

Maki Sushi – rolls or rolled sushi with slender strips of ingredients layered on vinegar rice and spread on a sheet of seaweed.

Chirashi Sushi – scattered sushi, the easiest sushi to make on any cooking recipe you can find around. Chirashi sushi is a mix of vinegar rice and all other ingredients.

Maze Sushi – mixed sushi, consists of deep fried been curd pouches stuffed with vinegar sushi rice.

Sushi is known to have ingredients which are naturally low in fat, high protein, carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals. Better grab a cooking recipe and hit the stores for ingredients!

The Thing With Celebrities’ Recklessness

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

img206/6594/stumbleyd1.jpg

Fact: In most pure or comedic horror movies, a lot of actors died with their head hitting a table or some hard ceramic figuring from a foreign country (credit this to their being reckless-while-being-chased quality). But, if you ask them who they blame they always have one answer - The Darkness.

So does this mean that lamps or light bulbs that hangs in our electricity outlets can be good Gift for actors?

Maybe something like this:

img515/218/martyrlamp1fs4.jpg

I’m sure you’ve noticed this in many films, and it doesn’t only exists in horror or spoof comedies, but also in serious movies that just needed a little reckless death from some of our favorite actors. Even the guys from CSI, or those doctors from Greys Anatomy have stumbled upon a lot of of those falling-down-the-living-room incidents either by accidents or as they say it.. a “Foul Play”.

But at least we get to have some party of reality in our movies right? Cause these things really do happen in real life.

Just check the most embarrassing moments in your old autograph and you’ll know it’s definitely true.
