Depression in Pregnancy

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

The famous Blue Lagoon goddess, Brooke Shields, almost had it all – a handsome, loving husband, a beautiful baby girl, a flourishing theater career, and a drop dead gorgeous body (as if it never went through the experiences of pregnancy and childbirth) - but she almost took her own life.

She was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression and went through medical and psychological treatment.

A dose of depression every now and then is essential for health promotion both mentally and psychologically. A milder case can be self treated through exercise, meditation or yoga and other health and fitness activities. The severe cases need specialized treatment of medical practitioners.

Pregnant women are more prone to depression. And it can occur during the course of the pregnancy and/or after the birth of the child. According to researchers the rapid hormonal changes occurring within a woman’s body during pregnancy and after childbirth may have caused the depression.

Some races have more health-promoting powers than others. Meaning they are more bale to cope and self-treat depression. But pregnant women of whatever race needs all the support she can get from husbands or partners, families, and friends because bearing a child and giving birth to it are quite overwhelming experiences.
