The famous sushi we often order in food shops is of Japanese origin. Sushi, “vinegared rice” or literally meaning “it’s sour”, originated as a way of preserving tuna – a type of fish. The fish is salted and allowed to set in vinegar rice. Thus, with the marriage of vinegar rice and other ingredients, the name sushi was derived.
A Japanese cooking recipe would tell you that there are various types of sushi. The combinations of sushi and other ingredients the way you see them in cooking recipes and the way they are served determine the types of sushi. You should not think that sushi is the raw fish. In fact, the raw fish is referred to as sashimi. Sushi is often topped with raw fish, meat or vegetables that happen to be what sticks on people’s minds.
These are the types of sushi according to a cooking recipe book I found:
Nigiri Sushi – a hand shaped sushi laid with toppings such as varieties of seafood or fish.
Oshi Sushi – pressed sushi, vinegar rice is packed into a mold and enclosed with marinated fish.
Maki Sushi – rolls or rolled sushi with slender strips of ingredients layered on vinegar rice and spread on a sheet of seaweed.
Chirashi Sushi – scattered sushi, the easiest sushi to make on any cooking recipe you can find around. Chirashi sushi is a mix of vinegar rice and all other ingredients.
Maze Sushi – mixed sushi, consists of deep fried been curd pouches stuffed with vinegar sushi rice.
Sushi is known to have ingredients which are naturally low in fat, high protein, carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals. Better grab a cooking recipe and hit the stores for ingredients!
