Old Style Hack & Slash Turn-Based Game

August 11th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve been playing a bit on the PS2 — which is on the brink of obsolescence — these past few days, enjoying “Soul Nomad and The World Eaters,” a game I recently bought.

At first look, you’d think that this just a kiddy game not fit for adults to play, because of its cartoony graphics and a simplistic 2D game environment. But I kid you not, this game rocks. The storyline is impressive. The game also has a whole slew of battle animations, and has great voice actors, especially the one handling the protagonist Gig, who uses foul language every time he opens his mouth.

Gig with his astronomical powers and three gigantic bio metal world eaters was supposedly the assigned death bringer from another dimension, bestowed with the charge to annihilate the world. But Gig did not succeed in his mission to obliterate the world; he was defeated by the warrior Queen Layna, who sealed away Gig’s spirit in an Onyx Sword. Now after 200 years of peace, the three world eaters that was left behind by the defeated Gig has started to move again creating chaos and destruction.

You as the hero/heroine have been bestowed upon a great responsibility by the warrior Queen Layna to destroy the world eaters. You are not alone in this endeavor to take on the world eaters however; you now hold the Cursed Onyx Sword in which the sleeping spirit of Gig lies. As Gig is the key to defeating the world eaters, Queen Layna has fused Gig and you in one body in order for you to take control of Gig’s power to ultimately destroy the giant world eaters.

Danette, your sparring partner and childhood friend, has been given by the warrior Queen the responsibility to watch over you and to ensure the success of the quest or kill you if ever Gig takes full control of your body.

With 20 hours of game play in Soul Nomad you get to see a plethora of characters with different characteristics that include soldiers, archers, pyremages, healers, and knights. Some of these characters will even join you in your cause!
