The UAAP (University Athletic Association of The Philippines) men’s basketball division championship crown for season 70 was grabbed by the De La Salle Green Archers. Vindication and vengeance after a season of suspension because of using ineligible players in the team, the Green Archers have proven to the Filipino athletic community its hunger for championship glory. Becoming champion for the Green Archers was never easy. Its arch rival in the UAAP games bowed down when a do-or-die game was held to see who will face the University Of The East in the finals.
The Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles lost to the Green Archers in the best of 3 semi-final series. The Blue Eagles won over the Green Archers 3 times in the elimination and play-offs. When La Salle won, it was the only time when 2 wins was greater than 3. Five games is too much for the weak of heart as the UAAP commentator said during the last remaining minutes of the game. Finals came and the University of the East Red Warriors with a 14 – 0 run in the playoffs were in for a shock when the Green Archers won by a score of 64 – 65. Considered as a fluke by some, the La Sallian community gave no heed to the rumors. Game 2 of the finals came and the Green Archers again showed to the world that it was no fluke. Taking control of the game and ending it with a 73 – 64 score, the De La Salle Green Archers were finally vindicated.
July is a few months away and season 71 is fast approaching. All the teams in the UAAP have the chance to steal the crown away from the Green Archers. Speculations run wild among the Philippine sports enthusiast community on whether the Green Archers are strong enough to defend the crown. These questions will be answered in a few months’ time as the drama of collegiate basketball will once again be experienced by the fans and teams of the UAAP.
