Fatherhood

March 4th, 2008 · No Comments

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “father”? Some would attribute it to responsibility, children, lack of freedom and no more time for fun.

But I would say being a father has more rewards than the downsides that most have said. When I learned that I would be a father I was filled with excitement and couldn’t wait when my child would come out into the world. I was very conscious of what my wife ate and what her daily activities were since I didn’t want anything bad happening to either of them during her pregnancy. After months of waiting he finally came out.

When I first saw my child I couldn’t describe what I felt; I more than euphoric, is such a thing is possible. Knowing that I am already a father I felt I have completed my life already. I could face death head-on. But this was just the beginning of a new life for me being a father. After that it was filled with sleepless nights, of diaper changing and bottlefeeding. When my son got sick I constantly carried him to keep him calm and help him sleep, which was tiring to say the least and caused muscle aches.

I find being a father very satisfying. There will be times that taking care of one’s child will be strenuous on the body but if I were given a choice if I would be a father or not I would still choose being a father. There may be no rewards but I feel happy that I have made a difference in my son’s life — that he will carry on and teach it to his future children.
