Family is considered as the basic unit of the society. We might be overwhelmed by the good and astonishing contributions done by the best leaders in the country and even in the world, but we sometimes forget that these guys grew up and were molded by their parents as well as their whole family.

In contrast, there are also those who also created a horrible reputation in society at large and sowed large-scale chaos. Yes, these guys also came from families.

I’m trying to think and analyze what makes up a good citizen?

Does a pastor father guarantee morally upright children? Will your alcoholic neighbor raise and produce the same kind of adults?

The person you get to encounter in the coffee shop has a different story and family background from the person you talk to in the laundry station. Each is unique and likely has a different perception about a lot of things based on their experiences and how they were brought up by their parents.

As a parent, it is a real challenge on how to be consistent in teaching my children to behave properly and to comport themselves in a courteous manner. I know I’m doing a pretty good so far but one thing I realized is that we can only do so much. Though we are unique, our children are as unique as we are, so there will certainly be times when we won’t necessarily agree on things.

It is our job as parents to lead a life that would serve as good role models to our children. We have to make sure that the things we do are morally correct.

As the saying goes, “Action speaks louder than words.” If we want to have excellent children, lets excel in our own ways. If we want them to be kind-hearted and conscientious, let it be us to show them how. If we want them to become law abiding citizens, lets be the first to follow what is right and show them that we are good followers too.

It is not an easy task. There is no perfect formula how to be a good parent nor is there an absolute rule to become the worlds’ #1 parents. What’s important is that in our day to day struggle, we make the effort to overcome our personal battles and show our children the fruits of our victories.

To parents who are confused, never forget that you always have a guide. That is, you always have the choice to follow what God expects you to do and become good stewards of God’s children. You cannot find a better reference than the Bible. You are less likely to go wrong by following the principles and teachings found in the world’s all-time best seller.
