Mike, an American and Clarisse, a Filipino met on-line and started dating. Their relationship grew from friendship to love. In a few months they were engaged. Mike traveled to the Philippines for their wedding. After spending a couple of months while processing Clarisse’s Visa, Mike returned to the States with his new wife.

Such so-called ’success’ stories of couples finding love through the Internet are commonplace. Is Cyber dating a wise decision? Many may argue that couples like Mike and Clarisse living thousands of miles apart would never had met if it weren’t for the power of technology. Others though consider such stories as exemptions. But didn’t they live happily ever after? Isn’t that what we all desire? Definitely! But just how much did they learn about each other during the few months of communicating on-line? How certain could Mike be that Clarisse is the sweet, hardworking, understanding person he fell in love with on-line? In turn how confident can Clarisse she will be respected, cared for, and loved for the rest of her life? “But they probably spent hours a day talking to one another, that must be ample time to get to know one another” you might reason. True. Then comes the issue of truthfulness and sincerity. A sly person could very easily pose as someone innocent and desirable when the contrary is true. Think of it-how many times do we ourselves use different ‘alias’ on-line? Maybe increase our age a bit just to enter some chat room? That’s minor, but what if every single statement, claim, emotion shown by the person was false? Disaster! Such experiences have left many heart-broken or very disappointed.
